In the case for Luna, her voice actor had to take some time off because her boyfriend had died, so luna didn’t get a lot of screen time, which doesn’t help with her character development

It's become less common over time due to intentional international release I think, but it's still shown up in some form in things like Seven Deadly Sins, even on Netflix

Writing standards for female characters is impossible. You either write them perfectly or you’re a terrible writer. And they have to be half the cast otherwise you don’t have enough representation that reflects the world we live in today despite the work under scrutiny is a fantasy book that’s not even about women.

I really, REALLY want to hear you talk about VRAINS as a whole, since it's a total trainwreck of a show and the reception is rather polarizing, especially over Yusaku/Playmaker's whole deal, since some talked about that he's a well-written character and that he's a total badass and all that, when really he's just Yusei 2.0 and has a lot of Gary-Stu-ish traits that make him way too overpowered and over-relied on. Say what you will on ZEXAL, but VRAINS is like the bottom of the barrel kind of bad out of all Yugioh series.

And yeah I agree with what you said and I feel this with another series that I have complicated issues with, which is Kingdom Hearts, like between that and Yugioh are series that do so many of the female cast dirty, Kairi is always a damsel in distress and always gets help from Sora alongside that training arc by the time of KH3 not pay off, Xion who was filler which if she died permanently, I could maybe see the development with Roxas but 3 revived everyone meaning what happened in 358/2 days pointless, like the only exceptions are between Aqua & Larxene but that's because they basically have no competition and even then it doesn't help much because I always feel KH sacrifices development for building up this insane lore that sure has my curiosity but it's at the expense of all the character writing and why it leaves me complicated with this series because I enjoy how it plays but it's tied to a lore that sacrifices character writing in the process

Your words at the beginning remind me of Star Wars The Acolyte. At least from what I’ve seen, all of the women are stoic and inexpressive. They don’t have any human parts to them, a personality, likes & dislikes. I think that’s why the ‘strong female’ archetype has largely been loathed as of late. Cause of a lack of humanity and feeling like real people to be relatable. Hey Loona and Milly may not have the deepest characters but at least they have humanity in them, personality, relationships, etc.

It kills me when people who know anime characters are fiction yet say the sexualization of said anime character is a “big problem” XD. Yugioh has had kids get their souls ripped out, kidnapped, beaten and almost near death…me thinks this show isn’t suppose to be family friendly.

Yu-Gi-Oh's issues arguably largely stem from the influence of Yoshida Shin, who basically took the mantle as the main creative director after Takahashi retired from the franchise. The guy outright admits he is uncomfortable with writing female characters and he obviously has issues with playing favorites. As soon as the Bridge series started they came out swinging with a whole lineup of great female characters and the largest complaint that can be hedged against the Bridge anime on a character writing perspective is that it has so many characters that are worth following it's really hard to balance out the screentime.
